Greens and MEP Thomas Waitz Highlight Success of LIFE Conservation Projects

Green politicians and MEP Thomas Waitz visited the Great Bustard conservation area in Deutsch Jahrndorf on 1st May 2026. The focus was on the EU-funded projects LIFE EUROKITE and LIFE EUROBUSTARD, which are dedicated to the protection of threatened bird species.

The visitors highlighted the success achieved on the Parndorfer Platte: through close cooperation between farmers, conservation organisations and hunters, the endangered Great Bustard was saved from extinction. Today, the area is home to the world’s largest population of this species.

At the same time, the Greens expressed concern about potential cuts to EU funding. The LIFE programme is under pressure, as its effectiveness has been questioned in part and the EU may allocate more resources to security, defence and economic competitiveness in the future.

The Greens therefore call for successful conservation programmes such as LIFE EUROKITE and LIFE EUROBUSTARD to be continued and expanded in order to safeguard biodiversity in the long term.
